Mission STEMCAP The STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP) at the University of Utah connects scientists, artists, and community partners with underserved Utah youth. The goal for all participants is to contribute to their community and tackle real-world problems through science, art, and media. STEMCAP highlights an often-over-looked population by introducing youth-in-care and local community members to each other. One facet of STEMCAP is “Mission STEMCAP,” an interdisciplinary learning series for students at each of five Utah schools to learn about and respond to environmental “Grand Challenges” (biodiversity loss, pollution, overconsumption, extinction, and climate change). With STEMCAP staff and guest presenters, students draw upon in-class workshops in the sciences, arts, and media over a span of two weeks. The goal is to empower students to understand and address major environmental challenges while providing them processes by which they can tackle grand challenges in their own lives. Outcomes include exposure of students to science content, artistic and poetic responses to these issues, podcasts/public service messages that are aired to the community, student letters to scientists and conservationists, and reflective work about the processes of solving problems at small and large scales.
