I found the point made at about 30 minutes in, that Odysseus and the Cyclops were the same, quite interesting - although ultimately it is invalid, when we consider both situations in the context of xenia. Odysseus and his men come to the Cyclops' cave explicitly seeking and requesting xenia, to be hosted as guests and assured the rights and safety measures that the divine concept carries with it. The Suitors, on the other hand, make a mockery of xenia, coming in and taking food and supplies without their host's permission. Thus the Cyclops' killing of Odysseus' men is a violation of xenia, and Odysseus' killing of the Suitors is just revenge for their violation of xenia. We see this tension throughout the Odyssey. 2019-09-25T09:48:13Z
