"With Such Friends..." (excerpts) by Tom Schnauber published on 2019-05-12T15:45:53Z With Such Friends... An Ungrand Opera Libretto by Jeff Duncan Scene 1: Mirgorod, Russia, 1910. Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich, minor nobles with major egos, are neighbors and the best of friends. Nikiforovich sings of the joys of being a nobleman and is joined by Ivanovich who, though not entirely in agreement with the details, shares his sentiments. Agafya Nikiforovna, Nikiforovich's sister, enters, lamenting the general lack of manliness in Mirgorod. She has found her brother's old gun while cleaning up after the maids; she and Ivanovich praise the bloody thrills of hunting. As a huntsman, Ivanovich feels he could put such an instrument to far better use than can its sedentary owner and offers him a trade. A quarrel ensues during which Ivanovich has hurled upon his person the vilest of epithets: Nikiforovich calls him a “goose”! Scandal erupts.
