The Picture House by Phoenix Radio published on 2019-11-01T15:02:57Z The Picture House (later The Gaumont, then Astra), Wards End, Halifax was opened in 1913 with seating for 1,272 and was the first cinema to introduce talking pictures to Halifax on the 22nd of September 1929. Its name changed to the Gaumont in 1948. When the Gaumont closed in 1960, the building was used as a Bingo Hall until the conversion into twin cinemas Astra 1 and 2 and a Bingo Hall in 1973. It closed in May 1982, reopened as the Coliseum Night Club in 1988 and is now The Attik Nightclub.
