"Do Everything": The Implications for Doctors, Dying Patients, and Their Families by Life and Death - RCHA published on 2020-03-18T12:55:07Z In this podcast we talk with medical historian Susan Lamb about the history of death and dying. Studies have shown that most Americans, approximately 80 percent, would if possible prefer to die at home. Yet about 60 percent of Americans die in acute care hospitals, 20 percent in nursing homes, and only 20 percent at home. Today we will talk about how Americans die, how they have died in the past, and what physicians and family members are doing -- or not doing -- to help patients and loved ones die. And we talk about what happens when family members have trouble letting go and are hoping for a miracle in cases where all possible therapies have been exhausted.
