It’s becoming obvious to most in the Jewish community that we are living in a state of siege. Look around. Practically every Jewish building and institution in America has security. College campuses are hostile territories; Jewish students are under attack by a hateful axis of radical faculty, Stalinist students, and Muslim extremists. Jews are being beaten in Brooklyn. Where is all this going?
Just 20 or 25 years ago, Jews were sitting pretty, admired by so many. Successful, and prosperous. Anti-Semitism was an echo of the past — or just yapping at us from society’s dark corners. But it was contained and not a threat.
Jews are still prosperous — but uneasy. We realize that we are under assault. We feel it.
What happened? Over the last decades, the progressives captured our civic institutions — the media, the campuses, the K-12 curriculum, the liberal churches, and now the energized half the Democratic Party. Progressives now tell Americans that Jews are privileged white people who support a white, apartheid Jewish state in the Middle East. Practically every major American institution conceives of Israel and her Jewish supporters as un-virtuous, and sometimes evil.
How did this happen? How did we fall so far, so fast?
There are many reasons for the rapid decline in Jewish prospects. After all, we now have three external foes — the anti-Israel left, which is now allied with radical Muslims, and on top of that, there are the perennial neo-Nazis, piling on. It’s a perfect storm.
But what is truly astounding — and outrageous — is the massive failure of Jewish leadership. We are besieged. How did they let this happen?
How did they allow so much of our youth to be hijacked by the Jewish left — by J Street, Jewish Voice for Peace, and IfNotNow? How many foolish Jewish leaders were themselves swept up by the lure of universalism, and the slogan of “social justice”? How could they have been blind to the danger — to the animus against Jewish peoplehood that this inevitably brings?
For decades, America’s Jewish leadership failed to understand the new threats. Like failed generals, they persisted in fighting the old war — against the right and the Nazis, ignoring the changing battle fields. It was easier that way. They still refuse to accept the Left’s betrayal of the Jews, and the impact of the mass influx of Muslim immigrants into the West. They are failing to speak the truth out of loyalty to the progressive cause — out of fear of a backlash from progressives’ constituents. For shame!
The biggest Jewish defense agency, the ADL, is not here to protect Jews; its priority is to protect progressive causes. Look at their mission statement: They are here, they tell us, to fight “any hatred” from the right — because that makes them kosher on the Left. So, naturally, they mostly ignore anti-Semitism from Muslims and progressives.*
The assault on our community will worsen until we get better, stronger, and prouder Jewish leaders who are not afraid to speak honestly, and fight courageously.
We need a Jewish Spring. An awakening. There are plenty of Jews around the country who fight individually or within grassroots organizations. If the call is made, many proud Jews will decide to no longer abide flaccid, foolish leaders who are leading us into a dark corner.
Today, we are making the call. Join us to change our community’s direction, and perhaps, its fate.
