As we continue on our inspirational living path, it is valuable to understand that unprocessed emotions from childhood are causing us emotional pain. However, we have the power to process and heal them.
Our childhood experiences may trigger emotional pain such as fear, sadness, abandonment, shame, frustration, and anger. Researchers speculate that even as early as in the womb, we are receptive to the emotions of others within our environment. As an infant, when we were sad, angry or scared, we freely expressed and processed our emotions. As we grew older, we were taught to hold our emotions in. Researchers suggest that these suppressed emotions do not go away. We store these unprocessed emotions in our physical energy field. They affect our daily life and will manifest themselves sooner or later because how we consciously and subconsciously appraise current reality triggers these unprocessed emotions, which can manifest as sadness, anxiety, or physical ailments. Therefore, it is important for us to explore and process the emotional experiences that are stored within our cellular memory.
We all have endured trauma on some level. Although most of us did not necessarily encounter devastating traumas such as wars, attacks, sexual assaults, etc., which I refer to as big “T” traumas. We all have encountered little “t” traumas such as being criticized by a parent, not receiving love and approval from a sibling and other hurtful and scary experiences from our childhood. These traumas are just as impactful as big “T” traumas and affect our day-to-day life. Yet, as adults we tend to minimize the emotions we endured in our childhood. You are probably not fully aware that you have trauma and emotional pain that is physically stored within your body. As a psychologist, I have found that talk therapy has its limitation. Current research is indicating that many of our psychological and physical ailments are rooted in unprocessed trauma, large and small, that is stored within the body. However, there are many ways in which we can get in touch with unprocessed emotions that are stored within our bodies as well as techniques to help us fully process them, which will be addressed n future podcasts.
