Uptight Sugar Cleveland Cleveland’s Uptight Sugar has at last unleashed and emerged from their 2018 debut EP, “Under Blue Light.” Drawing upon influences of 60s/70s Rock n' Roll, Psychedelia and Electro-Pop, their sound evokes vibey nostalgia—both familiar and fresh. The five-piece formed in 2013 as the now sought after cover band, The Sunrise Jones, rising to regional popularity with sold out shows throughout the Midwest and a dedicated fan base hooked on their incomparable renditions of every song ever loved. As Uptight Sugar, they deliver an original depth of sound reminiscent of classic Beatles, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music and Radiohead, mixed with modern impressions of Tame Impala, Mutemath and Spoon. Their newest release, “I’m Ok, You’re Ok,” showcases the band’s roots in traditional songwriting and storytelling. With the fevered vocals and pop sensibility of singer/songwriter, David Hamilton, “Ok” is a 24-minute trip lined with the universal themes of love, loss, and—at the core of both—hope. The band’s own Mike Murray harnesses the rich and layered production techniques of Jon Brion and Nigel Godrich, reinforced by the mixing expertise of Welshly Arms’ Jimmy Weaver. The result is an intricate mix of emotion, intention and experience that reveals more with each listen.
