Genre News & Politics Comment by Jennie Jones Very interesting. Thank you. Free markets only belong to economics and not to the rest of life. Capitalism has to have a deep underpinning to prevent humanity running amuck with envy and jealousy. What's needed and what we used to have was a value system based on Christianity which defined virtue and a virtuous society. Now we no longer have this underpinning (especially so in the ultra-secular UK) something else is needed to define virtue. I wonder if we will ever be able to devise a virtuous society without religion? Can the state deliver this? Or environmentalism? BTW I love the way PDeneen describes the global elite and their take on marriage: something that they go for but do not bother to praise or encourage in others, instead warbling on about gay marriage to make themselves feel virtuous. I'll be reading his book as I'm quite capable of reading something a bit more academic. Tut Giles, what's wrong with a well written serious book? e.g Lasch who is great. 2020-05-05T14:09:56Z
