Counterspeculations 02: The Speculative Spirit of Finance with Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou by UCL Urban Laboratory published on 2018-08-24T12:05:08Z Welcome to the Counterspeculations audiotour, a sonic guide to the nuances of financialization hidden in plain sight in the City of London, produced by the UCL Urban Laboratory and the ReImagining Value Action Lab. Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou, "speculative spirit of finance": The sphere of finance declares itself to be a secular, rational and even scientific domain of risk management and competitive calculation. But in this presentation, originally recorded on the steps of Saint Paul's Cathedral, Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou suggests that, from a sociological perspective, the world of speculative capital has many affinities to religions past and present. Komporozos-Athanasiou is an assistant professor of social theory at University College London where he also heads the Sociology and Social Theory Research Group. This and all the episodes of the Counterspeculations audio tour were originally recorded at a day-long workshop and walking tour in April of 2018 organized by Dr. Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou of University College London and Dr. Max Haiven of Lakehead University, Canada.
