Tourdion Traditional French Dance Band
Peterborough, South Lincs & North N
Tourdion, a very experienced UK-based 6-piece band, play traditional French dance music and songs for dancing or listening. We have many years’ experience of playing at French dances, as well as at concerts, festivals, parties and other events, mainly in the UK. We have appeared at local and national festivals, including Ely Folk Festival, Broadstairs Folk Week, Oundle Festival Fringe, Kettering Potbelly Folk Festival, and the Great British Folk Festival, Skegness.
The members of Tourdion have played together informally, and in various other bands, for 25 years or so. Florence, our caller, plays bodhran, and sings. Terry has an immense repertoire of traditional tunes; he plays hurdy-gurdies, épinette des Vosges and other stringed instruments (most of which he made himself) and sings. Andy plucks a mean mandolin; Paul provides tasty melodeon and guitar; Si adds twiddly bits on whistles (sometimes clarinet), and Debbie, on djembe, supplies a driving rhythm.
A typical Tourdion dance is similar to a ceilidh or barn dance, but with different dances; the caller walks the dancers through each dance, if necessary, including bourrées, an dros, mazurkas, scottishs, and some lesser-known regional ones, such as La Bistanflú, Lo Filoset, the Valse de Sundgo and the Virolet d’Angles. We can also tailor our set to other occasions, whether it be a folk festival, a concert, or a school, PTA, dance club or twinning association event.
