These are the sonic equivalent of science-fiction stories. Each aurelic (aural relic, or musical treasure) explores a different core idea. Literary inspiration was mainly provided by Philip K. Dick and Ted Chiang. Throughout the trek, thanks to my ♥ wife Ravenelle for being her, being here — and all those treasures from the pirate ship.
DESCRIPTION: The adulterated materialism integral to some styles of urban music reached their hyperbolic peak with Casinoclash, a genre based around samples of compulsive gamblers, controlling dice, and comp drinks. Abandon all hope as you realize not only have "they" removed the clocks, but that ultimate jackpot is always a step away...
NAME: Auspicious Architect
DESCRIPTION: If all dogs go to heaven, what about all mah dawgz? Embalmed in pitch-swooped choirs, gauzy harps, and fortified by bass-salvation... this proves you don't need sizzurp to get high on a — well — higher power. Listen out for the funny flourishes — even Creators have a sense of humor.
NAME: Twin Moon Festival
DESCRIPTION: Taikotronic is a subgenre of N-Beat that was popular in an alternate timeline's mid-2040s. It is characterized by bridging traditional and contemporary instruments over a complex polyrhythm derived from Zephos' "Practical Application of Taiko Drumming". Transient elements remind us of the wabi-sabi: beauty through imperfection.
NAME: Hungry for Power
GENRE: Chinese Schaffel
DESCRIPTION: What if Schaffel (German electronic music with a hard-shuffled beat) merged with the Chinese? Jokes aside, a sinewy minimal bassline is topped by pleasant pentatonic melodies. An unassuming and prosperous dish indeed!
NAME: Watermelon Salad
GENRE: Progressive Military-Industrial Acid Metal Trap
DESCRIPTION: Dual-purposing as a loaded political statement AND groovy vibe, this chimeric genre pays homage to its domestic and exotic roots while fusing all into a strange brew anew.
NAME: Marimbar None
DESCRIPTION: Ever want "four on the floor" but were deprived of having one more? With only (mostly) three kicks to a bar, this simple subtraction resulted in fresh stop-time dance moves. Breakdown sections usually involve modulation to a minor key, but continue to retain the rigid 3-to-a-bar rule. (No, that's not your smartphone ringing.)
NAME: Ego Ethno
GENRE: Rivertrance aka Global Tech-Waltz Wave
DESCRIPTION: Who likes ethnomusicologically-ignorant bastard blends of 80s VHS action flicks, frenetic African hand percussion, and some vaguely virtuoso Gaelic riffing in 3/4 time? I do, if I was brave enough to admit my obsession with how things developed differently on the other side.
NAME: Mortgage Payments
GENRE: Foreclosed House
DESCRIPTION: A zeitgeist form, Foreclosed House is reflective of the bleak American economic climate from whose hesitant loins it was so gutturally birthed. Sure, there's swing, but the party will have to wait — unless you want to incur further debt on your overloaded credit cards when you don't have healthcare. Trivia: Unstable pitches are symbolic of stock market volatility.
NAME: Cousteau's Calliope
DESCRIPTION: These beats are sparse yet spacious, evoking the tranquil vibe of exploring a well-preserved coral lounge while water caustics trance across the textured floor. Siphoned from a parallel universe where porpoises frequent underwater raves, hooked on Dolphonics worked for me!
NAME: Deckard's Decks
DESCRIPTION: Hard-boiled 1920s detective intrigue meets bubbly Bollywood proto-acid meets — well, listen all the way through. Things got retired in that club real fast.
NAME: Tropical Owls
GENRE: Tikipunk Techstep
DESCRIPTION: The Tikipunk ideology is partially about assimilating other genres with a pseudo-Polynesian vibe. In this track, the breaking beats of drum 'n' bass are "jungle" in their most serendipitous sense, accompanied by the exotica spirit. As a nod to how people imitated bird calls when they couldn't round up an actual avian, here my ♥ wife Ravenelle hoo-hooed the owls in. I couldn't resist sharing some of the "behind-the-scenes" commentary and make it an incidental weave unto the music thyself, which is what happens when my daily life and forays into other universes are duly intertwined.
NAME: Baliset Blues
GENRE: Through-Composed Dune House
DESCRIPTION: Get the double entendre? Ha ha ha! First, an improvisational melody is played on Gurney Halleck's mighty axe, focused on exploring unorthodox chordal intonations and variations in playing technique. Then, this fremen's favorite is coated in a blanket of sandy ambiences and periodic rhythms (but not too much, or it'll attract the worm).
NAME: Appropriate Response to Reality
DESCRIPTION: Like its literary equivalent, a musical Potboiler is paid for by the note (word) and exclusively performed on a tonal typewriter. Churned out cheap and quick. Similar to longer-form classical works yet aping them ex machina, this particular piece is divided into several discrete sections, each exploring a different aspect of sonic writer's block. Inspired by Philip K. Dick having to pay the bills and eat dog food, which utterly depresses me just typing that.
NAME: Sushi and Uni
DESCRIPTION: This piece is named for and features my two cats. This genre is all about cats and other critters with paws. Within, purrs and meows are fed through guitar amps and astral reverbs, conjuring diagonal visions of a feline empire beyond reckoning. Or at least until they come meowing for attention.
NAME: Ember Awakening
DESCRIPTION: Ideas may live on and instruments are prone to the passage of time. What if during their most intensely emotional moment, an orchestra played amidst flames as their tools were consumed by the searing heat? Curiously, the sounds of fire resemble well-loved vinyl crackles.
NAME: Yet Even More Glitch Piano
GENRE: Glitch Piano
DESCRIPTION: A continuation of Torley's 50-track album Glitch Piano (2011). Imagine if you will, an oblique variation on a classic piano tune, spliced through dozens of intricate DSP/FSU algorithms. The core remains pure, while the satellites roam freely around the panoramic field, pointing to worlds yet uncharted where the master race of sentient pianos continues to enslave humans.
NAME: This Orchestral Life
DESCRIPTION: Before a symphonic orchestra can become self-aware, it must realize that its warm-up is music too. Unsteady strings, papers shuffling, and even coughs all contribute to the composition.
