TORI HANDSLEY - Electric Harp
RUTH GOLLER - Bass
MOSES BOYD - Drums
Contemporary electric-harp led trio which draws upon a myriad of jazz, rock and latin influences, side-stepping any of the usual genre categorisations and what one might expect to hear from a harp trio. The trio performs original compositions written by band leader Tori Handsley with resounding riffs and layers of improvisation. Particular influences include: EST, Neil Cowley Trio, Bad Plus, Keith Jarrett, Dorothy Ashby, Nigel Kennedy, Debussy, McCoy Tyner & Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Composer, arranger and performer, Tori Handsley is renowned for her unique take on the harp, hailed as "definitely one to watch" by Mike Chadwick and featured in Jazzwise Magazine "Who to Look out for in 2014"; "keep an eye out for harpist Tori Handsley whose uncluttered approach delivers a fresh angel to the scene" Paul Pace, Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club, Spice of Life.
“Tori Handsley took the harp into unexplored territory with her open-minded, mesmerizing post-EST compositions and freely improvising young trio at Soho's Spice of Life.” Selwyn Harris, Jazzwise.
The trio's self titled EP, released both in CD format as well as online, was promoted by Mike Chadwick both on his show 'The Cutting Edge' Jazz FM and on Soulandjazz.com. "Not an instrument you hear that often, and certainly not as a lead instrument". Mike congratulated Tori on "making some amazing music on the harp".
One of the highlights of her career was touring with her childhood hero, Nigel Kennedy, as part of his band for his Duke Ellington tour, and one of the most inspiring experiences of her life. Tori has since performed with artists including: Orphy Robinson, Cleveland Watkiss, Pat Thomas, Shabaka Hutchings, Rowland Sutherland, Neil Charles, Claude Deppa, Doug Boyle & Adam Waldmann, and recorded on the acclaimed Kairos 4tet album ‘Everything we Hold’. Tori is a member of the Jazz Warriors International and helps run 'Freedom' a monthly free improvisation night at the Vortex hosted by Orphy Robinson.
She has performed at venues including The Vortex Jazz Club, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Albert Hall and is an active member of the jazz and free improv music scene.
Drawing her own path, Tori specialises in composing and also arranging unusual music for the harp; pushing boundaries and challenging preconceptions, passionate about exploring the versatility and potential of the instrument. Influenced heavily by piano and guitar, Tori has also taken tuition with John Parricelli exploring and adapting techniques to emulate different sounds, and to treat the harp as if any instrument. Along her journey, and having the opportunity to play with many incredible and diverse musicians, Tori continues to develop her own rich palette of sounds and unique take on the harp.
Tori was lucky to be brought up in a creative house, learning the piano with her mum when she was 3, and the harp when she was 6. Her dad although not a musician, was always an avid jazz fan, and Tori recalls growing up with the likes of Monk, Miles, Keith Jarret, MJQ, Dizzy & Bird blaring from the kitchen. She was awarded a music scholarship from the age of 10 and is also an Associate of the London College of Music (A.L.C.M).
"I don't usually like the harp. But the way you play it, it sounds like a different instrument" - Claudia Carr, artist and tutor at the Royal College of Art.
Tori is also a visual artist, and keen environmentalist, and is a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art. She is involved with many other projects including a free improv multimedia project at the Royal College of Art - FEAR http://torihandsley.wordpress.com/film/
