As of 2016: all 50 states have been served by openly LGBT elected politicians in some capacity;43 states have elected openly LGBT politicians to one or both houses of their state legislature; there has been one openly bisexual state governor; one state governor has come out as gay; no openly LGBT person has served as president or vice president of the United States, nor has an openly gay person ever served on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Recently, The White House said that President Trump was “determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community.”
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner reportedly helped push President Donald Trump to uphold a 2014 executive order protecting LGBT people from workplace discrimination. The president’s daughter and her husband, who serves as a White House senior adviser, worked to nix a draft executive order outlining how to roll back some of the protections granted by former president Barack Obama’s 2014 executive order, Politico reported, citing “multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.”
Progressive groups have expressed concern that President Trump could overturn protections and rights gained by the LGBT community under the Obama administration. Vice President Mike Pence has a long history of opposing gay rights, and as governor of Indiana he opposed legalizing gay marriage. What role will the LBGTQ community play in shaping America? Will President Trump and the 115th Congress continually protect the rights or will there be debate? With most of the elected (past and present) LBGTQ officials on ALL levels of government being Democrat how will the parties come together to Kraft an agenda for ALL?
