Bad Actor demos by Tom Swafford 1 published on 2017-02-06T18:58:14Z Demos (sung by Tom) for the musical, Bad Actor. Music and lyrics by Tom Swafford, and book by Swafford and Kristofer Kauff. Bad Actor is about a musical presentation which appears to have a self-help theme but in reality has more nefarious aims. A performer in the presentation, (the "Bad Actor") starts to question the messages being communicated and begins to go off script and derail the production. The musical theater style is meant to be exaggerated and annoying in order to represent the messages we receive in the media and elsewhere; things like "as long as you work hard and believe in the correct things, you can have anything you want." This kind of messaging is also used to indoctrinate people into cults. A workshop performance of the first act, directed by Kristofer Kauff, was held at The Tank in NYC, October 19, 2017. We didn't get to the point where things really start to break down- and the style shifts to more improvisation and experimental music. I intend to come back to this project and develop it further in the future.
