Rethinking Democracy in an Age of Pandemic by TLRHub published on 2020-04-30T10:31:56Z As the world grapples to deal with the fallout from COVID-19, this special series of workshops will explore the impact of the pandemic on democracies worldwide. The workshops are organised by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute in partnership with the Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University. Over five workshops, we will consider whether the crisis is changing how we think about nations and borders. We will discuss the implications for the marginalised groups hit hardest and interrogate the role of inequality in this public health emergency. We will examine the implications of the new normal on the everyday, as billions of people worldwide adjust to living in some state of lockdown. Finally, with access to the conventional means of protest lost and the news media under potentially catastrophic economic pressures, we will ask if democracy can function without the public sphere. The 90 minute workshops will engage international speakers and participants comprised of academics, journalists, authors, arts practitioners, civic society representatives, activists and policy makers.
