Dathan began singing at a young age, joining the MS Children’s Choir (Malaco Records) where he led several songs on their three recordings. “There Is Hope” and “Thank You Lord” on the Child of the King album, “Let's Change The World” on the New Creation album, “Things Go Better with Christ,” “I'm Blessed” (rap) and “Remember Me” on the When God's Children Get Together album.

Dathan was no stranger to the Mississippi Mass Choir (MMC) being a Mississippi Mass kid since the choir's inception in 1988, with his mother Dorcus Curry Thigpen as the choir’s directress and his uncle David Curry, Jr as the co-founder. Dathan officially joined the MMC in 1999. Dathan led the title track, “Amazing Love” on the MMC’s 2002 recording. Later that year, he accompanied the choir on their tour of Spain. Gospelflava's review of the album in which the title cut was on their Top Ten List for several weeks noted: "Prime among them is Dathan Thigpen's sensitive lead vocal on the album's title track.
