Random Walks by Kiani & his Legion published on 2019-02-18T09:46:11Z This music is made via random walks, which are stochastic processes that are able to create notes and effects without interference of the musician. It is part of an art-science project in which I'd like to fuse concepts from my statistical research in ecology and my love for synthesized music. This piece is based on animal movement analysis. I'm involved in research towards elephant migration. Animals often show movement patterns that resemble statistical random walks in two dimensions. Here, I've created music based on such random walks, in which the note being played follows a (truncated) random walk in one dimension and the low pass filter follows a random walk in a second dimension. This is done for multiple instruments, in different step lengths. The drums were traditionally programmed. Some notes: - I looped a part of the patterns for each instrument to make it more musical. But I can venture into more experimental territories and create hours of music based on probability. It sounds nice :-) - Elephant movement is actually more complex than a simple random walk. - The music is not mastered yet.
