Having toyed with the idea of writing atmospheric instrumental music for a while, Barnes was left bedridden following a serious cycling accident in November 2020. The period that followed provided the inspiration for what would become A Spectral Moon, an album based on the repercussions of the accident. Following the release of A Spectral Moon, Thistle Sifter played a handful of audiovisual concerts across the Netherlands in 2022, including AFAS Live in Amsterdam (with Sigur Ros) and Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht. The live line-up features Pete Barnes (guitar), Tom Broshuis (guitar), Rob Wickham (synth & bass), Koen Klarenbeek (drums) and Thomas van Gaalen (live visuals).
