The Solomon Cole Band are a hot quartet comprised of bassist and veteran UK songwriter Lee Catlin, Waiheke Island drummer Dione Denize, and vocalist Miss Sophia, all of whom stand alongside front-person (and primary songwriter) Solomon Cole, whose wailing blues-soul vocal delivery and guitar drive the band.
Their aim is to create a set of explosive and exalted rock'n'roll blues, soul-based songs that NZ Blog 13th Floor recently referred to as "hearkening a cross between QOTSA , The Black Keys and Tina Turner". The band also cite somewhere between artists like The John Spencer Blues Explosion, Gary Clarke Jnr and Led Zeppelin, in a modern take on traditional music.
In their first 24 months they supported veteran American artist Martha Davis & The Motels on their NZ tour, headlined both nights at The Okere Falls Festival 2015, opened NZ Fashion Week 2015, and recorded their debut album "Bruises", with veteran NZ engineer Nick Abbott ( Goldenhorse, The Datsuns) on mixing duties.
Raw, emotive and impassioned, they are undoubtedly the sexiest little quartet on the rock they call Waiheke Island, a new and fierce little independent music scene that is gathering national and international exposure itself for the high quality of album releases coming through in 2016. The NY Times noted in 2015 that Waiheke Island was one of the top 25 places to visit in the world for its bohemian culture, arts and wine. The Guardian (UK) has noted it as one of the top islands to live, and recently it was cited as the 4th most beautiful island to reside in 2016.
Solomon Cole (Derek Solomon) is also a published member of Songbroker via Aeroplane Music, has previously released records with bassist Lee Catlin and vocalist Sophia Faalogo under the name Payola ( Gone To Ground via Jayrem Records & Dirt and Stars) and was also vocalist with Auckland stoner-blues rock band These Automatic Changers (alongside bassist Lee Catlin) who released the record Have Mercy in 2014, and recently supported internationals such as Uriah Heap, Ace Frehley (ex KISS) and Pop Will Eat Itself.
Miss Sophia has also fronted popular funk collective The Reputations and Dione Denize also drums for Raglan-based blues trio Good News For Modern Man. Lee Catlin still makes electronica music under the name Ghost Town Museum and is part of the Artisan Project (with Solomon Cole) to produce music for publishing, as they both have their own studio on Waiheke. All four members play in The Waiheke International Soul Orchestra (new brainchild of Solomon Cole that is electronic/funk/soul/r'n'b based, with live percussion, drums and bass).
Together they have combined their respective talents into The Solomon Cole Band that has a growing reputation as a superb live show that takes the raw soul vibe of early Ike & Tina Turner, and lathers it with a hard blues guitar stomp and delivers low-brow, thigh shuddering rock and soul music to full houses wherever they go.
'Bruises' will be released on October 14th via Aeroplane Music Records.
