Theresa is a Texas original born in Tyler and raised in Houston. She was exposed to music at the early age of four and learned to play all of the woodwind instruments, the piano and guitar. At the age of eight, Theresa formed an unbreakable bond with the saxophone which led her to receiving accolades for her outstanding musicianship all through grade school. Theresa further developed her love of music when at the age of 12 she
began playing for the church. It was in that dynamic she learned the soulful texture of gospel music which ingrained in her playing style.
By the age of 16 years, Theresa was already performing with local bands also gaining valuable experience in show business and recording. She earned a sterling reputation from musicians, recording artists and choirs as an accompanist in their live performances and recordings.
Theresa further honed her skills and developed a greater passion under the tutelage of internationally known instructors/musicians Chuck Nolan, Dr. Woody Witt and Dr. Rod Cannon of Sam Houston State University and North Texas University. She earned a degree in music performance and jazz studies. While continuing her love and knowledge of music Theresa earned two master’s degrees with an emphasis in music education and leadership. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree.
Theresa’s performances have been described as eclectic and cutting edge. Her unique sultry sound is inspired by great jazz legends Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Grover Washington Jr. She performs more than jazz in her concerts also including other genres of music such as Gospel, Pop, Rhythm and Blues, Calypso, Latin and Classical.
Theresa’s achievements are many and varied, but those she is most proud include performing as the lead saxophonist for the gospel production “But Lord What About Me?” She performed in live recordings with Greater St. Matthew Choir, the Texas Southland Singers and made an appearance in the Stella Awards honoring Frank Wilson sharing the stage with saxophonist Ronnie Laws. She also appeared as at the opening act for Archie Bell and has shared the stage with Marion Meadows, Pieces of a Dream artist Eddie Baccus, Joe Sample, Ronnie Laws and other well known recording artists.
She has been showcased on several Houston artists recordings and was honored with a special appearance with Houston based gospel band ‘Leviticus’ during a CD debut that featured saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Theresa has performed on KHOU Great Day Houston, Channel 26 Fox Rocks Live, Music World’s House of Dereon, and Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Artist Showcase in
Theresa’s performances have received rave reviews as on of the featured artists at the 2006 Third Annual Soul Fest in Austin, Texas and at other well known venues and festivals across Texas including Market Street in the Woodlands, Texas, Beaumont Jazz Festival, Women in Jazz, Houston; Sugarland Town Square, and the 1st Annual Zachary Breaux Jazz Festival in Port Arthur. Theresa toured nationally with legendary artist Grammy award singer Michael Bolton. She was also featured in her second annual Advent concert at New Faith Church, Houston, Texas in 2008-2009. A dazzling artist, Theresa headlined on the 1st Annual Red Cat Jazz Festival in 2010. Theresa received exceptional reviews for her performance in the Houston International Jazz Festival 2011 that sparked Houston magazine to featuring Theresa as the jazz musician of the month of August 2011.
Theresa currently tours with International Inspirational and Jazz Harpist Jeff Majors and continues to perform as an independent saxophonist and educator.
Theresa released her first solo CD “It’s All About You”. The CD will feature songs produced by legendary Skip Nallia, Quincy Cole and special appearances from a host of international musicians.
