In the last few years a new generation of improvisers have made their mark on Amsterdam venues.
The Ambush Party, formed in 2006, is at the forefront of this lively international scene. The group developed its sound in underground venues and it is now also blasting the audiences on such renowned stages as Bimhuis, Paradiso, North See Jazz Fest, Buenos Aires Jazz Fest, Moers Festival.
Personal styles and sounds inform the improvisations, which balance precariously between individuality and teamwork.
"This international quartet knows no boundaries. All is thrown into its inventive, joyful stew... Faithful to its name and to the circus life, The Ambush Party delivers a wild, engaging ride."
All about Jazz - Eyal Hareuveni 12/3/14
"Six years ago they've found them self at the vanguard of the Amsterdam improv-scene, displaying and spreading their impressive art of improvisation...
The Ambush Party's music is a melting pot of jazz , world music, avant -garde and neo-classical... You hear influences as broad as Tom Cora, The Ex, Edgar Varèse, Peter Brötzmann, Mick Barr, John Zorn and Misha Mengelberg, but what the group here emits is really completely unique.
It may be difficult to grasp, but once digested you won't let it go. Class!"
Jan Willem Broek - Caleidoscoop - 19/12/13
”The powerful personalities in The Ambush Party belong to the fourth generation of adventurous Dutch improvisers. Instant composing lives on.”
- Tim Sprangers: The Volkskrant ****
“The Ambush Party did what it does best: work together as an extemporaneous collective, in search of sound and color…TAP's music was about having fun, and if anyone was being ambushed, it was the audience” - John Kelman: All About Jazz
“Improvising collectively, TAP’s material galloped among references to trance, Dixieland, Klezmer, free jazz, Tango and even opera...a familiarity with the Three Stooges as much as so-called classical chamber music.”- Ken Waxman -NYC Jazz Record- (Moers Fest.)
