Low Fantasy by The Resource Centre published on 2013/02/16 22:14:24 +0000 THE RESOURCE CENTRE John Hanson is a Birmingham-based artist, (Magnetophone – Earworm, Static Caravan, 4AD/The Resource Centre - First Fold). During his time recording under the project titles Magnetophone and The Resource Centre, John Hanson’s activity in sound has included a variety of Single, E.P. and L.P. releases on a wide variety of formats on a wide variety of labels. He has also provided soundtrack work for film, including the 2008 motion picture film on the life of legendary fashion designer Valentino: Valentino: The Last Emperor, as well independent film and video art. His latest work with The Resource Centre has involved sound, visual art and text. In The Resource Centre’s inception in 2009, John Hanson, working in music education at the time, undertook the meticulous process of developing his own music library of archived sounds found within the Music Room in which he taught; he began assembling short compositions and recordings from this auditory catalogue, The Resource Library. Using the methodologies found in pedagogical approaches such as Carl Orff’s The Orff Method, or The Orff Approach and submerging himself by other artists’ work associated with music education, such as Daphne Oram and Gunild Keetman, these forays in electronica resulted in the release of his first EP on First Fold Records in 2010: The Resource Centre Series – EP 1. The Resource Centre’s moderate and minor approach to writing and recording often leads to wide-open and balanced compositions in an effort to coerce sounds to agree with each other in a minimal yet arresting way. Largely without beats, the music often uses variations in rhythmic patterns to create often simple, unfolding electronic musical structures. With the emphasis on harmony and composition, The Resource Centre’s disciplined and discreet approach leads to lightly processed and sympathetic arrangements borrowed from a select palette of archived sounds to create evocative and beautiful musical forms.
