The Gitmos Uncle Samir Cornflu The Gitmos began in 2006 as a group holding free movie screenings at the Indianapolis bar, The Melody Inn. The hope was not only to present controversial documentaries like America: Freedom to Fascism and others to people who may not have seen them before, but to make a gathering happen of like-minded people to discuss politics outside the mainstream. Success was limited, but it was fun. By 2008 The Gitmos had morphed into a rock and roll band (an idea which had always been in the background). They wrote and recorded songs, put them on Myspace, and eventually debuted live the night before the 2008 election. Since then they have recorded more songs and began making music videos. Many people are confused by the politics and opinions of The Gitmos. This is because they don’t fit neatly into the controlled parameters of Left and Right. Songs like “Buy A Gun” might endear them to so-called “right-wingers”. However, those fans might be shocked to hear “Get Your Gas at Citgo” which celebrates the socialist leader Chavez while criticizing the US media and government’s portrayal of him. Whether libertarian, anarchist, republican or democrat, The Gitmos like to keep people guessing and ask them to think for themselves.
