Disability Advocacy Hour - Episode 6: Supported Decision Making with I Decide Florida by The Family Cafe published on 2021-03-08T16:19:52Z The good folks from I Decide Florida join Jeremy and Joe for an informal conversation on all things Supported Decision Making. Comment by Stephen The possibility of a codified Supported Decision Making law is exciting for the disability community; however, the perspective of a responsible parent guardian advocate was clearly missing from the discussion. SDM will be a great tool for some people and should be considered along with all alternatives to guardianship; however, based on the dozens of parents I have assisted with decisions about guardianship as a pro bono attorney and public speaker, guardianship alternatives, including SDM, will more than likely continue to be the exception, not the rule for most families. The advice I give to parents about using guardianship alternatives, including SDM, will continue to be the same: If your child’s intellectual, social or emotional age as it relates to a certain skill set is such that it would be irresponsible to allow a neurotypical child of that same age make a critical life decision on their own, then serious consideration should continue to be given to guardianship. 2021-03-23T21:28:35Z
