Engaging Students through Immersive Role Play - SXSWedu 2017 by SXSW EDU published on 2017-03-14T19:44:10Z Reacting to the Past is a highly immersive role playing pedagogy that is used in an extensive and diverse set of higher education institutions. Students delve into the time periods at hand, reading primary texts from the era and debate to sway other characters to their views. Students in Reacting Classes are actively engaged; lectures may set up the class, but students run the debates while in character. Mark Carnes, Professor of History at Barnard College, created this award-winning pedagogy. It has grown to become a consortium with a governing board, chaired by Gretchen McKay, Professor of Art History at McDaniel College. Both will speak about Reacting on the Panel presentation.
