BigCamp: How Hackathon Changed Edu in Korea - SXSWedu 2013 by SXSW EDU published on 2013-04-29T17:29:40Z Korea's government announced that they will start smart school from 2014. But no one knows what kind of school smart school will be or what kind of preparing for student or teacher are needed. The concept of smart school is too broad to get some specific solution of our education system. It mainly causes new kinds of new stress for our teachers. We (DesignTent, one of volunteer groups in Korea) were inspired by Hackathon and SXSWedu and decided to hold a new educational event that adapts an industrial creative scheme, such as Hackathon and the facilitation of education. BIG CAMP for Education 2012! During an intense 36 hours, over a hundred people came together for one dream. Twenty teachers and ten students proposed their ideas for changing their class or school, and fifteen designers helped teachers make that idea become reality. Finally, forty S/W engineers spent over 30 hours to develop a prototype of an app or Internet service for that idea. We held SMALL CAMP every two weeks to completely develop our idea.
