Surrealists is the DJ/Production alias of James Storr (26) to showcase his latest productions, passion, knowledge and influences of Minimal / Techno.
Surrealists started off as the duo of founder members James & Ash Johnson. Both decided to take different directions in Summer 2010 when their music influences began to vary too far away from one and others to continue.
The project was originally formed with the sound obsession of (the new then tribally, ethnic minimal / techno one coming out of Ibiza in 2006 / 07 and especially DC10 from likes of Matthias Tanzamann, Audion, Pedro, Raresh, Rhadoo etc… After the split James wanted to carry the sound of minimal / techno on through the new wonky / dark sound emerging.
Surrealists have been around for around two years, and the sound is becoming more and more appreciated on ‘the scene’. Manchester is were the main following is based, with numerous appearances throughout the city including Mixmag’s Number 1 club in the world Sankey's supporting the industries biggest names including – Martin Buttrich, Nic Fancuilli, Marc Romboy, Wally Lopez & Paul Woolford.
Along with appearances around the country, established monthly residencies at 'Deja Vu' as well as the secret underground parties 'Follow the Rabbit' followed. Surrealists have supported some of the industries big guns including Octave, Coyu, Audiojack, Pete Tong, Hans Bouffmhyre, Mark Broom & Terry Francis to name a few. Things are going from strength to strength.
Main influences helping Surrealists realise a dream and start, include original pioneers of the underground sound including Sven Vath, Ricardo Vilalobos, Carl Cox, Timo Mass and Steve Lawler.
The biggest influences to Surrealists current sound comes from predominantly - M_NUS label culprits: Gaiser, Marc Houle & Clickbox. BAR 25 label culprits: Philip Bader, Sascha Braemer, Nicone, AKA AKA.
On the production side, after just over 1 year producing, Surrealists talent and influences are starting to come through as they are beginning to mould a new, unique sound. Merging all sounds that are heard along the way, to now mould a new rare style - a dark, tribally, experimental sound, which along the way has gained numerous thumbs up, and received support from many top DJs including... Marc Houle (M_NUS), Sascha Braemer (Datze / Bar 25 / Dirtybird), Octave (M_NUS), Nic Fancuilli (Saved), Prudo (Dirt Crew Rec / Players Paradise), Alfra Romero (Players Paradise / Titbit Music), AKA AKA (Stil vor Talent / Burlesque Musique / Pentagonik), Gareth Whitehead (Bullet: Dodge) & Sysknob (Expmental Records) to name but a few.
Following on from that have come a string of releases on numerous and respected labels.
Debut 'I Am a Walking Disaster' EP on Expmental Records gained massive support and thumbs up in Europe and from many big names in the industry, including Octave (M_NUS) prior to release in March. It also reached number 94 in the Beatport Minimal Chart in its first week of been released. Along with that 'Climbing The Ladder' EP has gained thumbs up from Marc Houle (M_NUS) and Octave (M_NUS) again. Already things are looking strong for a BIG summer 2010.
Surrealists are now currently concentrating on production, with hard work in the studio, getting as much music out to you all as possible, but can be caught through UK appearances that come up.
