' Hi all, Romain here. Below some details about what happened when we wrote Explode.
HOW DID WE WRITE EXPLODE AND WHY
Explode was initially written end of 2011. I came up with the riffs, wanted a very short song, something seminal, fast, a bit aggressive, attitudinal. After Drenched I felt I should strip it down to the basics, abandon rhetoric, refine the punk juices. I have always been fascinated by bands who could write short impactful expressive timeless songs like Napalm Death, Slayer, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Drain Bamage, Oyster Throat, Cerebral Ballzy, Off, Thrash Talk etc... Plus at the time Rob and I were already carrying loads of songs on our shoulders and didn't want to go for very complicated stuff. It's funny to witness that 2 yrs later we wrote songs that got even more complex. Rob and I never really stick to our words: we are constant indecisive.
THE PRE_RECORDING BAND AUDITION
I recorded a very rough draft for Explode on my computer, did the stupid drums, it all sounded very awful. I turned up on a Saturday to the cave (our rehearsal space) and played the song to the boys. I was nervous. They are tough judges. I know that if I get it wrong I could loose a good idea to share with them. I didn't have the lyrics or vocal lines done yet. They thought it was ok but said that without the vocals it was difficult to assess the potential of the song. IN these circumstances it's usually Rob who's cool and supportive. Jay listens and usually agree but he would also drop some ideas and say what he thinks/feels the song is too close to at the present time in terms of influences. Arran 90% of the time agrees with me. When he doesnt like a song it's very difficult to convince him. Arran has 99% ultra-wide tolerance but admit himself he's been into alt-rock/punk/garage/blues all his life, so when it gets too over-writen and heavy he's less keen. I understand that. Nobody would make me write an RnB song.
ACTUAL SPEED BURNING
I then traveled to Avignon, sat down with Zool and played him the song. He absolutely loved it. We prepared the studio and set up the metronome to 160 bpm and did a take. We listened to it, looked at each other and agreed we could do it faster. An so we did and recorded each time, 170bpm, 180bpm, 190bpm. I think we settled for 180. I perso can play up to 220bpms comfortably. 240 is feasible only if i had a good night of sleep, know my parts inside out and in a good mood. I don't think I've ever recorded beyond 240bpm. Before being in SUBSET I have had a long spell of playing death-metal fast stuff for over 10 yrs so those of you out-there who love that style you know and understand how fast it can be.
After recording bass and guitars I sat down and started writing the lyrics in the studio. At the time I hated my job, lost a girlfriend I was very close of, I was angry at the world we knew at that time, the financial crisis in Europe, the frustration of my younger friends who couldn't get a job, my artists mates who couldn't get published or booked or exhibited. I also had loads of problems with my landlord and neighbors as always. Plus I could never keep up with txt msgs, emails, mails, all the stuff I was supposed to remember doing. And the boredom of sometimes being stuck at home, not being able to play live cause we would be let down or cancelled or our equipment wouldn't work. Jay and Rob also had their share of contingencies to deal with on a daily basis. They talk to me frequently and I simply have to transform what they tell me into feelings. All of you out there in a band know what it's like. So I decided to write about all these tensions, these invisible punches I would get in the face, impatience and unused energy. Then I stood by the microphone and prepared a verbal assault of lines that would be so long I would almost strangle myself with when singing then. Zool and I realised the delivery had to be both dramatic and perfect. So I worked for 2 hours on a metronome repeating the lyrics again and again up to the point where I would self-brainwash myself. We did half a dozen of takes and agreed on the best parts. Then I did one exaggeratedly screamed angry wrong and out of tune. To my surprise Zool thought It was good enough to keep some of that too. That's the last scream you hear at the end, drenched in sweat, shaking with anger, burning with rage.
We played Explode live for 6 months. The first time was at the CrouchEnd festival, under the rain, in front of 20 frozen people (lovely UK in May). We then kept it on our playlist until recording the rest of Loverdose. It goes down well when we are at full energies level and in front of a punk crowd. Often in pubs people would find it too loud or too aggressive. It went down well in Luton at the Castle and the George and there are videos on youtube of that I think somewhere. One thing that frustrates me when we play this song is I feel I'm stuck behind the mic and can't jump around with the boys while playing it hehehe
