STEVEN CAICEDO (Proton Radio/Ready Mix/Apollo/Monde Ose - USA)
This world traveller started his artistic career almost by chance; after co-workers in the music biz pushed, prodded, poked and finally convinced the then 19 year-old to open for the likes of Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim, Moby and even Lenny Kravitz in his native NYC. Soon after, he hooked up with the creators of ProtonRadio.com and was instrumental in launching the site. Bringing the little known internet-based radio concept to the gatekeepers of the scene, now Proton has evolved to be the gold-standard of artist and label development on the web, with many accolades and a core fan-base of over a quarter million subscribers from all around the world!
For the past 15 years, Steven worked and spearheaded many projects in the music industry: from music buyer at Borders (NYC), to Independent Marketing Rep at Passionate Marketing, a music retail, lifestyle, and club promotion / strategic marketing company. Some of Caicedo's sensabilities as an artist no doubt stem from the wide array of marketing and promotion campaigns worked while at passionate; some of which include: Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum, Bebel Gilberto, Les Nubians, Roni Size, Daft Punk, Underworld, Enigma, B-Tribe, and Sigur Ros. In addition to introducing standout film soundtracks including Triplets of Belleville, Amélie, and cult classic Trainspotting,. Other artists include Goldfinger, Placebo, Tricky, Morcheeba, DJ Krush, Smith & Mighty, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Van Morrison, Al Green, Tony Bennett & K.D. Lang, Buena Vista Social Club, Gipsy Kings, Cesaria Evora, Steve Reich, and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as compilations including Buddha Bar and Cirque Du Soleil Remixed.
It didnt take long before his enthusiasm and hard work paid off as he accepted the offer to take the Retail Marketing Coordinator position at Astralwerks / Virgin Records. This position gave him huge exposure to the ins and outs of a major / indie label. Some of my campaigns included : Air, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terry, Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl) Beth Orton, Erland Oye, Kraftwerk, Kelis, Placebo, Royksopp, Chemical Brothers, and Fatboy Slim, which was the first Album that proceeded to sell over 1 million copies in the US alone; and many more around the world; was the first electronic album in the U.S. to achieve such a milestone.
Never stopping, never settling down, Steven has also done his fair share of globe-trotting; from the crystal clear beaches Puerto Rico to the mountains of Peru, from the canals of Holland and the streets of San Francisco, from Miami the Winter Music Conference, to warm up & closing DJ for Moby’s Campus tour to San Francisco. Most notably, Steven has graced the decks and held residencies at some of the Big Apple’s legendary venues like: Limelight, Tunnel, Exit, Carbon, Plant Bar, Bowery Ballroom, Centrofly, FIlter14, Vinyl, & Shelter.
After a chance meeting, Steven hooked up with Montreal's BiG AL and together, they launched the Proton Sessions concept at the world-renowned Stereo Nightclub in 2001, subsequently falling in love with Montreal’s rich culture and vibrant nightlife scene.
As Steven puts it, "Montreal is the NEW - New York"!
2011 ushers in he collaboration between Ellroy & Steven Caicedo, and shows much promise, with such standout remixes as Deon's 'Twist It Up' & Evren Ulusoy's 'Fade To Blone' on Proton's Apollo label, and Yvel & Tristan feat Chriss of the Quasar's 'A Miracle Man' on Ready Mix.
2012 looks bright for Steven, as he celebrates his first CD Compilation entitled: Already Mixed Volume 01, and sets his sights to the horizon once again, gearing up to share his energy and vibe with unique productions, and performances with the world.
Perhaps the best testament to Steven's success over the years would be the countless eyebrows he's raised, or the various positive reactions stemming from dancefloors, or the heads he's turned locally and internationally. As he unselfishly spreads his knowledge, the listener goes through a wide range of emotions. One emotion however seems to always stand out, experienced time and time again: that ineffable feeling of love. Love given, received, felt, lived. And like love, Steven knows no boundaries and conquers all.
