Steve Marshall is a singer, writer, producer, performer, composer, engineer and all round artist.
“…voices like his deserve the respect, because the music is so uplifting and full of the whole range of ingredients.” Bob Jones, Blues & Soul Magazine.
“…with Marshall’s excitingly layered, infectious music, Desert Crossings remains a sensory pleasure.” Donald Hutera, The Times
“The abundance of natural soul is undeniable.” Bill Friskics-Warren, Washington Post.
Notably, Steve has produced albums with Lee “Scratch” Perry. Two of these received Grammy nominations. Working with Lee led to recording projects with Keith Richards and George Clinton.
He set up State of Emergency with dancer Deborah Baddoo, which marked the beginning of a long association with dance-theatre. His score for Desert Crossings achieved critical acclaim and the show toured in South Africa, Canada, Germany and the UK. Most recently, he composed the scores for State of Emergency's productions Love&Sex and Choices & Consequences, and went on to direct the dance musical, Where Is Home? which has been touring in South Africa, the UK and the USA.
As co-founder of Pyramid Arts Development in Hackney, East London, Steve performed, recorded and wrote with exceptional artists from around the world, including Clifford Jarvis (USA), Alan Weekes (UK), Ernest Mothle (South Africa), Clive Roper (Jamaica) and Jimmy Scott (Nigeria). These early associations with jazz, reggae, soul, RnB, Afro-fusion, rock and electronic music have served as a great foundation.
