DJ Tony S. (spoagraphics)
“Scratch.” To crate diggers in Marseille, from 1996 to 2002, this wasn’t a simple
onomatopoeia –or Lee Perry’s nickname. It was DJ-turned-graphic-designer
Tony S’ independent musical magazine, which ended up being handed iconic
status.
Scratch, though, was far from being the 38-year-old native of La Belle de Mai’s
sole achievement. The experience helped him, after it ended, conceiving graphic
communication for his own outlet, Rock and Soul Organization (which he created
in 1995), but also for Marseille’s cultural staples such as Africa Fete, le Café
Julien, Le Poste à Galène, El Ache de Cuba, the Logique Hip Hop.
Without, ever, forgetting his roots in music and crate digging. From 2002 to
2004, Anthony was the programmer at the alas defunct Le Poulpa(son) club,
which allowed him to book then largely unheard-of in Marseille artists such
as Sage Francis, Andy Smith, M Sayyid, T-Love, Why?, Dr Israel, Dee Nasty...
Later Antho ran into Alan Douglas, an American producer who worked with
Jimi Hendrix, The Last Poets or Miles Davis. For his label, he made a dozen of
sleeves for jazz records. Since 2010, without, ever, releasing his life-long grip
on his turntables, he’s been exhibiting artists and has organized cultural events
in a new array of upcoming Marseille places (Le Petit-Longchamp or La Part
des Anges).
