Composer-performer SOPHIE MATHIEU has won numerous awards for her work writing music for concert performance, dance, theatre, film, and multimedia. She writes music that explores concepts of vastness, timelessness, intimacy, and ethereality. She loves gradual changes, finding timbral grey-areas, and exploring the humanity in instrumental ensembles.
Currently completing her masters in composition at the University of Texas at Austin, Sophie currently studies with Russell Podgorsek. Earlier on in her masters, she studied under Yevgeniy Sharlat. She completed her undergraduate at the University of Southern California, studying under Ted Hearne, Andrew Norman, and Donald Crockett. Sophie has won the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Competition four times, was a finalist in Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra's Call for Scores, and was an honorable mention in the FivebyFive Ensemble’s call for scores. Her string quartet, indigo, was a finalist in the fourth annual String Quartet Smackdown competition. Sophie’s concert works have been performed by outstanding ensembles and soloists such as yMusic, Roomful of Teeth, Hila Plitmann, Ensemble Dal Niente, NOW Ensemble, Lina Bahn, Timothy Loo, Mak Grgic, and John Pickford Richards. Sophie has participated in festivals such as New Music on the Point, Nief-Norf, and Sunset Chamberfest (returning as the festival’s Young Composer in Residence the following year). Recently, her orchestral work, moons, earned her an honorable mention in the ASCAP Morton Gould awards.
Sophie plays cello, as well as several baroque and renaissance string instruments. As a cellist, she has played and recorded in venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Capitol Records, the Nief-Norf Summer Festival, and the Clint Eastwood Scoring stage. Additionally, she earned the Colburn Scholarship in Early Music Performance during her time at USC and received a USC Ensemble Award for her participation in USC's Baroque Sinfonia. Sophie also managed and conducted USC's student-led orchestra for three years during her undergrad.
Outside of music, Sophie enjoys cooking, playing Sid Meier's Civilization V, and watching psychological horror films in her free time.
