Synopsis Maquinas humanas .
This short sound piece is an adaptation of the play R.U.R (Rossum's Universal Robots) that was written in 1920 by karol Kapek. The play introduced the word Robot, which displaced older terms such as "automaton" or "android" .In its original Czech, robota means compulsory labor. The name Rossum is an allusion to the word rozum, that means "reason", "wisdom", "intellect" or "common-sense".
The story develops in an island where there’s a factory that makes 'artificial people', biological machines that are being sold to the world as cheap labor force. They are called Robots, but are closer to the modern idea of androids that can plainly think for themselves. Although they seem happy to work for their creators, that changes and leads to the end of the human race due to a hostile robot rebellion.
The identification of the robots with the working class of the industrial capitalist times is evident. In this visionary play the author criticizes our attitude towards technology. He expressed that all the machines can be worthless to the mankind if it doesn't know how to use it, that not always progress come together with evolution.
This audio comic is a free adaptation of the original text, a mixture between drama and radio art with the aesthetic of the comics. The concept of production was made as a factory ,assembling pieces from many sound sources (recordings, downloaded sounds, on line dictionaries, electronic modified sounds, sound effects, fragments of songs, audio archives, vocoders and tts software’s, a fragment of a Charles Chaplin movie translated to Spanish, etc).
It’s made in different languages because the play happens in a kind of Babel tower , but the main characters speak in Spanish. The voices were made with text to speech software’s to create the sensation that even humans can behave as robots, losing their emotions, living a life of repetition, building the system, the invisible control web. A mechanical experience with electronic rhythmic, an artificial reality in a world full of tiny noises.
