It all seemed like a dream back in 1999 when Simmah was finishing Primary School – Thembani Primary School – imitating the sounds of Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, the late Whitney Houston... Growing up in a township such as Langa where the opportunity to explore ideas is limited became very difficult to express his musical thoughts and feelings with the community, so the ‘dream of music’ ended up going nowhere as a result of lack of motivation. High School time came and Langa High School – where he studied grades 8-12 – was no different: no motivation, no encouragement, self-hustling only! Apart from surviving the negativities of growing up in a township, he discovered his voice when he found his lyrical 1 writing ability in 2002. The title of the first ever song he wrote was “Friends & Boyfriends” but there was no follow up made on the song due to the childishness and craziness of the lyrics, however his childhood friends forever tease him about how naïve and silly the song was. Because the Matric Certificate was an important ‘thing’ to obtain, the dream of becoming a singer ended up being just a hobby.
After completing Matric in 2004, Simmah went to TSiBA Education to pursue his studies in Bachelor of Business Administration however a few years later he dropped out because he felt that his passion for music was being compromised. In his years at TSiBA he learned a lot about “sell-reliance”, “resilience”, “risk taking” and “perseverance” so he knew exactly what he wanted to become and was willing to embark on his journey of discovery. Plans do not always go as one wishes so there were few jobs on the line for him in order to continue “living” (including Truworths, Lillywhites, Two Oceans Aquarium, Umthombo Wesizwe Childrens Project, Economic Policy Research Institute…). The voice coming from his heart was still not freed by the jobs. He knew he needed to do something with it. In 2010, he went to South African Idols and reached Top 100 in Cape Town but could not make the Sun City rounds due to song choice. As a determined person, he swallowed the disappointment and looked further. In between Simmah found time to complete his Certificate in Office Administration from Rosebank College, Western Cape and a Certificate in Public Management from Regenesys Business School, Gauteng.
In February 2013 a mindful decision was made by Simmah to host a concert for his birthday where he would sing other artist’s songs (covers). On 9 July 2013, Simmah (then known as Lil’Sim) was born! He hosted a debut cover concert titled “One Night Stand” at Zer021 Lounge, Green Point, Cape Town. The concert was a huge success with positive and uplifting feedback from Zer021 crew as well as the audience which was a mixture of “then” colleagues, friends and family.
Simmah has since been unstoppable in his music career. He has performed in a number of venues, shows and towns such as Port Elizabeth, The Great Wizoo (Rosebank, Cpt), Westend Club (Rylands, Cpt), Blue Sky Mining Backpackers and Lodge (Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu Natal), Steenberg (Cpt), Mossel Bay, Paarl, Steenberg to name a few. He also appeared on Media 24’s City Vision; made an appearance at Cape Town TV; has been interviewed by Bush Radio FM, Community Vibes Radio, Radio KC 107.7KM... Simmah is currently in studio recording his Promo Album with no release dates yet. He currently has 3 singles which are all freely downloadable on Datafilehost which he uses as promo singles (1. My Break Light, 2. Sexy U R and 3. Unexplainable Love). His promo album will have a mixture of genres from R&B, Pop, Soul, Deep House to Electro Pop. His lyrical writing influence is Mary J Blige while his stage presence and performances are inspired by Beyoncé, SA’s Kelly Khumalo and the late SA divas Lebo Mathosa and Sis Brenda Fassie.
