Although it’s always hard to tell where a dream truly begins, the earliest part I can remember was in my room. I was in my room doing…whatever…and finally decided to go to bed, so I laid down on my couch. The strange part about this scene is that it was the exact same location that I had actually fallen asleep in. The one and only difference was the fact that the curtains on my window were open in the dream. I laid on the couch, turned partially outwards, and stared through the window. Out my window should have been more houses, in my dream however, my backyard was just outside my window.
The area out there was fairly dark, considering it was near midnight at this point, however a faint blue/white glow came from nearby street light. One thing that stood out in this scene was a small, white mask sitting propped up on the fence. It was sitting on top of the fence posts right in the corner. It was a bright white color, which reflected the street light very well and stood out against the darkness everywhere else. The mask looked a lot like the masks worn by the members of Anonymous, but it wasn't exactly the same design. It also had elements similar to a batman mask, like pointed ear-like pieces on the top. The mask was very simple looking, with no paint on it anywhere, just white plastic. The only exception was some large eye holes and a small slit for the mouth.
At the time I really didn't think anything was unusual about it, and I figured some neighborhood kid just left it there. The bright white light reflecting off of it was distracting though, and so I turned around to try and get some sleep. My face was now right next to the back cushions of the couch, so close in fact, that I could feel my own breath bouncing back at me off the cushions. I lay there for a minute or two just trying to fall asleep, feeling the weight of my eyelids.
When all of a sudden a wave of anxiety came over me, like a shot of adrenaline went straight into my heart. For some unknown reason I suddenly felt very unsafe. I felt worried from not being able to see the rest of the room, and so I turned over to once again face the window. What happened next only took one second in my dream, but lasted as the most memorable part. Out the window, sitting on the fence where the white mask was sat a dark creature that could only be described as devilish. It was a thin, bony being with thick black skin like that of a black widow, looking like shiny black rubber, tightly stretched across its skeleton. This skin was pulled so tight that no wrinkle or fold could be seen on it anywhere, just a uniform black sheen. Its body was built just like a humans would be, with all the same parts to the skeleton, clearly visible under the tight rubbery skin. Its face is the only part that I couldn't tell if it was human or not, because it was covered by the white mask. Even the eyes, which I should have been able to see, were hidden by shadows and darkness. It sat there in a very composed manner, looking all too comfortable to be perched atop a row of fence posts. It sat on the top of the fence and let its legs dangle over the side of the fence facing the yard. Its legs and arms were the thinnest part of its body seeming to have no muscle in them what so ever. Its fingers and toes were one of the creepiest parts. They were long and thin like the rest of it, but too an even more unbelievable degree. They were about three times as long as a humans fingers and the toes were even longer. Normal people walk with their feet at a 90 degree angle and at rest they tend to hang at a 135 degree angle, but this creature’s feet hung, seemingly comfortably, at a 180 degree angle. It was like there was no real ankle joint, but instead just a bit of space between the foot and the leg. It just stared at me with its head cocked in my direction.
Just a second after seeing it I quickly turned around again to face the back cushion of the couch. For some reason, avoiding ‘eye’ contact with It made me feel somewhat safer. I lay there for a minute looking at the couch. I was breathing incredibly fast and my heart was racing, clearly on the verge of having a panic attack. A moment later reality caught up with me and I realized that It was still outside my window. I had to know if I was in any real danger and so I slowly turned around to look out the window. I stared back at the fence and saw nothing. It was gone. Even the mask was gone. I let out a big sigh of relief while closing my eyes and allowing my head to fall reducing any stress in my neck. When I opened my eyes again the mask was back, propped up on the corner of the fence just like before. I immediately freaked out, fully aware this meant it was about to return. I started hyperventilating and once again turned to face the back of the couch. I had no idea what that thing was or what It was going to do to me; I only knew that it wasn't safe to look at It. I was getting more and more worried, knowing It was behind me, knowing It was watching me, and thinking that it might be inside my room this time. Not knowing what else to do I tried to scream; only to find out I couldn't. For some reason my voice wasn't working at all. The only sound was my constant, rapid, breathing. I tried harder and harder to scream and slowly I could hear a faint sound. I tried harder and harder, stressing my vocal chords to their limits. Finally I was jolted awake and let out a big burst of air - but not a scream. The weirdest part was waking up in the exact same position as I was in my dream. My eyes widened and I tried to catch my breath. I wasn't completely sure if I was awake so I tried moving around a little. My movements felt a little different, so I was pretty sure I wasn't dreaming. I looked at the window to see that the shades were closed. I started to calm down and as I did I unfortunately started to fall asleep again...
I fell back asleep and was now in a different room. I couldn't tell exactly where I was, because I'm pretty sure it had never been there before. Somehow I knew that it was part of my house though. One floor above my room. In reality that was where my attic is located, and this place seemed to resemble that, but if it had been fixed up a little nicer. It was roomier than an attic would normally be, a lot cleaner too. There were lots of random items on shelves and such surrounding the room. There was lots of exposed wood along the walls, floor, and ceiling. As would be expected in any attic. It was now beginning to get light outside..probably about 5 'o clock. It was an overcast day, and the sun was just starting to peak over the horizon. The small amount of sunlight gave the room a strange purple-ish glow. Everything about this room looked real enough, but something felt strange. Maybe because I was still in shock from what I saw out my window. It was strange in other ways too. It seemed too sudden to be in this room. To go in and out of dream and reality in the same place and then just appear in the attic. Also the lighting change made no since, It had been the middle of the night just moments ago. Also, I was no longer laying down on a couch. I was sitting cross-legged in the middle of the wooden floor. I was just sitting there looking around at the place, trying to figure out where exactly I was, and why I was there. I was facing the hole in the floor where the stairs leading down to the rest of the house enter the attic. There was a bit of railing around the whole area. Behind me, and to either side were shelves of random items, mostly old books and flower pots.
As I was looking around the room, still sitting in the middle of the floor, a woman came up the stairs and into the attic. She came walking towards me. I was completely lost again, I didn't know who she was. She looked a lot like my mother. Long, jet-black hair. But something was different about her. Something I couldn't exactly identify. I could not figure out just who she was, but she clearly knew me. She walked up close to me and then sort of bent down to my level. She put her hands on her thighs and rested, halfway between sitting and standing. We both just looked at each other for a few moments. I was getting more and more confused. I could not get the image of the creature outside of the window out of my mind, and somehow I sensed that she was thinking about It too.
At last I said something along the lines of "What am I supposed to do about It?"
She looked at me for a moment more, and I got the sense that she wasn't actually thinking about the same thing, and now she was confused. But then to my surprise she responded to my question. "I don't know." she said very matter-of-factually. "But killing yourself is not the answer."
Again I just stared at her quizzically. I had never mentioned anything like that, nor had it even crossed my mind till the moment she said that. I was so completely lost with what she was trying to tell me. I wanted to ask what she was talking about, because she somehow seemed to know more about It than I did. But just as I was about to ask her she stood up straight and started to back out of the room. As she stood up she was just tall enough to block one of the few windows in the attic, making the place very dark around me. She finally turned around and walked down the stairs to head back down. As she descended the staircase her head lowered past the window letting the light stream back onto me.
I just sat there, in the attic, wondering what I should do about everything...I was completely lost as to how i should react to what she had told me, or if i should do anything at all. I thought that maybe it would be best for me to just stay there in the attic. That maybe staying there I could avoid the creature outside my window, if It was still there. I thought that I would be able to avoid any danger, and therefor not get myself killed like she had said. And so I sat there. On the dimly lit hardwood floors. Doing nothing.
Then, for no reason that i could particularly point out to you, I realized that I shouldn't be there. I felt, from all corners of the room, that something was watching me. It was anticipating my next move. I didn't see anything. Didn't hear anything. But I somehow knew that somebody was in the attic with me. I slowly stood up. I didn't want to surprise it by getting up too quickly. I slowly extended my legs until my knees popped into place, making a small 'crack' sound. At the sound i quickly scanned the room to see if anyone had been alerted to the sound. Nothing moved. Just a bunch of old useless items stored away on shelves. The only thing that I noticed was different was the sunlight. It was now morning time, probably around 6 o clock, and the sun was starting to come through the windows much more than before. Still subdued by the overcast weather, but nonetheless I could tell that it was early morning now. The feeble amount of sunlight somehow made me feel a little safer.
Feeling somewhat reassured that no one was watching me for the moment. I began to walk over to the stairs. Constantly glancing behind me, and to either side, just to double check that no one was there. I soon reached the stairs and climbed down. It was old and full of splinters, but I already had my guard up, so I was very cautious going down it. I neared the floor and hopped off the last rung. Before me was a hallway, just like in my actual house, and things started to make some since again. I walked down the hall, still very slowly. As I passed my room I got that awful feeling again, like something was watching me. I didn't take the time to look into my room and investigate. This time i wasn't going to go slow to avoid being noticed. If I felt like I was being watched then I clearly had already been noticed. With that thought, along with the visions of the creature possibly being inside my room at the moment just inches away from where I stood at that moment, I ran. I bolted out of the house, unlocking the front door as fast as I could and running out onto the cold pavement outside. I didn't bother to close the door behind me. Maybe that was a bad idea, I will never know for sure. Right then as I was passing the window to my room I realized that things had returned to normal, there was no backyard in front of my window, no fence, and no mask. All of that which I had seen outside of my window was now gone, and I was standing right where it would have been. In reality there was no yard or fence there, so this sort of made more since. Still it was strange how that changed so quickly. The windows to my room had the shades drawn over them, probably for the best.
I decided that I still wasn't safe there and so I continued to run. I ran around the corner where my house ends and the street begins. I ran along there for a while until I was out of our housing tract. It was becoming somewhat foggy on account of the weather and it was hard to see too far ahead of me. I took a quick glance back at where I had come from. I couldn't see back all the way but there was nothing unusual there anyway. I realized that I was out of danger for now, and so I decided to slow my pace. I needed to catch my breath. I am not very good at running in reality, and I am usually even worse in my dreams. Usually everything goes in slow motion and it seems like I'm practically running in place. But this time I had actually ran. It wasn't crazy fast, but it was more like how I could have ran if this were real. Which was kind of creepy. It made it seem like I wasn't dreaming anymore.
I tried to shake that thought from my mind and continued walking along the city streets. I had no plan for where I was going, just that I needed to get out of my house. I didn't know if I could come back later either. All I thought about that moment was that I had to leave. That's all I would let myself think about.
I started to look at my surroundings to figure out where I was headed. I noticed a lot of tall buildings. This was not typical for the suburban area where I live. There should have been some shops, and other houses. The only tall building stretching down as far as I could tell at the intersections. It was obvious that I wasn't in Fountain Valley, this area looked more like uptown LA, with the overcast weather washing everything in the color grey. I looked behind me again, and instead of seeing my housing tract just behind me I saw more tall buildings going all the way down the street as far as I could see. Once again, I was lost.
I decided that I should change my course, because heading down the current street led me straight for who knows how long. I came up to an intersection and stood at the corner waiting for the 'walk' sign to appear. Three business men stood between me and the button to cross. They were all facing the same way I was headed thought, and so I assumed that they had already hit the button.
They all looked the same, and I figured that they must all work together in one of these tall buildings. They all wore basically the same three piece suits, with vertical grey pinstripes. They also wore hats, much like business men from the 1920's would have worn. Similar to a fedora in style, but kept classy by matching the jacket's grey pinstripe color. They were all slightly different heights, descending as they got further away from me. They all stood the same way too. Blankly staring at the other side of the street, with their hands in their jacket pockets. It was sort of eerie. I tried not to stare at them, but couldn't help it, I was waiting for one of them do something out of sync with the others, but it never happened. I noticed that they were even breathing at the same rate. They all inhaled and exhaled at exactly the same time, and each breath had the same amount of force. These three could not be more alike.
I caught myself staring at them too much and quickly looked away. I watched the cars going by, all of them washed in the overcast grey color. As I was watching them drive by, I felt that I was being watched again. I looked to my right and saw the business man closest to me slowly turn his head to look at me. This was out of sync with the others, as they continued to stare out at the street. His face fully turned and looked directly at me. Only it wasn't much of a face. It looked like he had been horribly disfigured, maybe by fire. His face lacked much color, except for a light greenish tint, which stood out from the grey. It was lacking all facial features and instead had indentations and bumps around where facial features should have been. Most noticeably was the big bump for a nose, and the indentations where his eyes would have been. They were empty though, no eyes, or indication of where the eyes would have been, just a big dent in that general area. I stared back at him for a moment wondering how he noticed me looking at him if he didn't have any eyes. I leaned to my left to get a better look at the other business men, who still hadn't turned to look at me. Their faces where much the same, slightly greenish, with no real facial features. Their faces were even simpler though, more of a blob than anything. I returned my gaze to the first man, wondering who they were and what they were doing here. Then he began to move towards me.
He didn't move by picking up his feet and waling though, he just sort of slid over in my direction, with his feet sliding under him. It looked like his whole body was like the part of a snail that comes outside of its shell. As he moved towards me he swayed from side to side, and doing so he knocked his hat from his head. The top of his head was missing any hair, but instead had a sort of funnel coming out of the top. This funnel slowly extended to about a foot long. It too swayed from side to side as he squirmed along the ground. At this point his clothes were starting to look very loose on him. They started to slip down to the ground and then completely fall off of his body. His whole figure looked the same as his face, grey-ish green with no real shape to it, just a big blob. He was getting closer to me and so I began to back up. As I did so, the second business man turned to look at me, immediately knocking off his hat with a jolted turn. His clothes soon fell off too just like the first. His body had no shape either, except for the bottom of him, where his feet would have been. There was a mass of knotted tendons and connective tissue running from the first man to the second, and I could see there was another "rope" leading onto the third who was now beginning to squirm in my direction as well. The whole thing was three shapeless blobs, connected together in the middle. They were getting closer to me and so I took another step back. The crosswalk now displayed the walk sign, but there was no way I was going to try to run past this thing. I had no idea what it was capable of.
Then it's funnel atop its head started making this revolting noise. It was like someone vomiting and breathing through a congested nose at the same time. It was clearly sucking air through the funnel, and as it did so the top part would widen. It bent its head down to point the funnel directly at me. The sucking sound got louder and louder, and the pressure from it was incredibly strong. I started to walk away from it. I was walking backwards so that I was always facing it. I didn't want to turn my back to it in fear of what it could have done without me looking. I walked backward as fast as I could, but it was moving at nearly the same pace. I was getting a little distance on it, but not much. I continuously glanced behind me to see that I wasn't walking out into a street or another person. Oddly enough there were no obstacles at all. Not even any intersections. The sidewalk behind me just stretched on forever.
I grew worried looking at the never ending sidewalk, and wondered what use it was for me to continue to run away from it. I may never get anywhere. I looked at it. I had managed to get about ten feet of distance between me and the creature. But if I were to stop running from it it would catch up to me in a matter of seconds. It seemed completely pointless. Then the idea grew in my head that I should just give up. That running from it served no use to me, that I needed to face it. I thought that if I kept running from it down this road that I would be running from it forever. I realized that the only way to change that fate, was to give up and meet it face to face.
I stopped running and just stood in place. It was getting very close to me, the opening of it's funnel sucking harder, and widening even more. I winced as it got nearer, still not sure if this was the best outcome. It's funnel went straight for my face first. And just before it made contact with me the woman's words echoed in my head.
Killing yourself is not the answer.
Instantly feeling regretful for this decision, I realized it was too late. The funnel connected with my face and then everything went black.
I jolted awake.
