SHAFT XXL, is a no rules DJ. This guy is one bad mutha f**ker. SHAFT XXL has been wrecking minds and bodies since 1999. He has graced some of the best nightclubs in Washington D.C., like the legendary Nation (RIP), Fur, Ibiza, Ultrabar, Heaven and Hell, Cafe Japone, Panache and chic Club Five (RIP) to name a few. His ambition is to make his audience move. “The Nod,” is his driving force. A DJ based on funk meets punk. He traverses the spectrum of genres. Mixing is about A to B, not necessarily a smooth seamless blend, and not always a head-banging peaking bass drop.
“SHAFT XXL chooses tracks that others would never consider mixing.”
DJ Satori - Mixed Signals, Washinton D.C.
SHAFT XXL takes his persona from the 1970’s Black-sploitation heroe John Shaft. Like SHAFT, this DJ is “a complicated man.” He splices and spins Breaks, Funky House, Disco, Deep and Progressive House, Big Beat, Electro, Baltimore Club, Dubstep, Garage, Drum and Bass, anything he can mix to keep a crowd intrigued and guessing. His admiration of the turntablism scene is apparent in his cut and paste credo, utilizing transforms, scratches, and back spins, to spice up his performances. Some of his other tastes and flavors include, Classic Hip Hop, Classic Rock, 80’s and Motown.
A Co-Founder of the DJ crew Plate Techtoniks circa 2001 follows the same philosophy SHAFT XXL follows. “Ground Breaking Music,” is their school of thought and their modus operandi. This DJ collective and production crew does not subscribe to genre boundaries and promotes music as one style, as a natural elemental force for supporting life. Plate Techtoniks Crew is named after the physical mechanics behind the shaping of our planet Earth. Tectonic Plates are always shifting and meta-morphing the planet from the surface to the core fueled on geo-thermal energy. Just like music moves the body and the soul…our inner spiritual energies are like that of geo-thermal forces. Hence the evocative mission statement of “Ground Breaking Music!” They represent the evolutionary properties of music.
If you also believe in keeping beats evolving and keeping them bad ass…funky, sexy, nasty, sweet, and epically fun in all its forms, when you step onto a dance floor this cat SHAFT will have you partyin’ Xtra Xtra Large, can you dig it? I am just talkin’ bout SHAFT XXL, damn right!
