Nick Shades is an American DJ/Producer hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. He began exploring his natural connection to music via guitar lessons, and exposure to rock, metal, hip-hop, and early forms of electronic music through his elder brothers. Shades was involved heavily with the Hardcore/Metal band scene prior to his introduction to electronic music. Along with his best friend, Ricky, Nick utilized his education in guitar to recruit a band. Unfortunately, Ricky was killed in a car accident shortly after. The loss not only destroyed the group, but sent Shades spiraling into a deep depression.
Nick was later introduced to the evolved sounds of electronic dance music through the auto tuner community in 2008. Attending live Dubstep and Drum & Bass shows in Baltimore sparked the lively new passion for sound design and production, which birthed the Nick Shades of today. He purchased the proper DJ equipment and diligently practiced until finding himself opening for the seasoned Baltimore promotions crew, Good Vibes.
Nick Shades has since expanded his performance reach throughout the east coast, and played with acts including Unexist, Gridlock, Silent killer, Breaker, Maztek, Mark Instinct, Moth, Cretin, Legion, Rocky styles, Unicron and Strato G. He has drilled dance floors in venues from Gerogia to New York, including Moonshine Festival (Georgia), Farm Fest (NJ), Sonar (Baltimore), Ultra Bar (DC), and many more. His DJ skills have earned him resident crew affiliations including Good Vibes, Dubstep Mafia, and his own Broken Beatz Underground.
As a Producer, Nick Shades was introduced to the newly founded Vera Records (NJ) in 2013. His advancements in original sound design and knowledge of FL Studio earned him the tutilege of label head Cem Garip, a 10+ year sound designer, producer and mastering agent. Shades absorbed every bit of feedback he could handle, and poured it directly into his official freshman EP release, “Arise” (August 10, 2014), with Vera Records.
“The “Arise” EP is a beautifully dark arrangement of Dubstep, Neuro, Tech Step, Drum & Bass and Industrial influences. It’s blends of cinematic ambience, mysterious melodies and winding bass design are highly appealing to Metal and electronic fans alike.”
- Tim Bonner (Lead A&R | Vera Records LLC)
“Its the love for music and the experience it gives me, while being one of the only things I can turn to in this life to heal and feel better. This is the only reason why I do it. I will never turn my back on music again.”
