SETHRO RLM Entertainment Eugene What is your name and what city do you rep? My name is Sethro. I grew up in a small town in Oregon called Klamath Falls and I currently reside in Eugene, Oregon about two hours south of Portland. I was born in Medford, Oregon and have spent my entire life in this state. I’d like to go on record saying I rep the entire state of Oregon not just a single city. What shaped your music? It would be impossible to narrow down a single thing that’s shaped my music. It’s been a lot of years and a lot of life experience as well as time in the studio that’s shaped it. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my sound and lyricism. I love to write and I know that shines through in my music. Music is an expression of self, and you’ll hear my heart and soul in my sound. A lot of success and failure has shaped it. Failed ideas, failed lyrics, failure in general is a huge motivator for me. Never giving up and always pushing through to that next break through is what shapes it generally speaking. It is the sound of persistence embodied. When did you realize you were going to make music professionally? I feel that making music starts out as an escape from reality for most artists. It’s a way to explain everything you’re going through. It’s a way to let out everything you’ve been feeling. I started out writing short poems when I was in high school and was always a huge fan of hip hop. I wasn’t exactly the most educated when it came to the history and culture but I knew that I loved the way the beats moved me. I just wanted to be on someone’s iPod. I wanted people to know me as the guy who could rap. I spent a lot of time when I was younger just joking with friends freestyling and just being playful with it. That eventually transferred into me writing to beats and recording. At first it was such a new and exciting thing for me that I just wanted to put out any content at all. I knew I wasn’t the best or most skilled when I was 18-20 years old but it was an amazing outlet for me. I think that I finally realized I was going to try and make music my profession after my first time on stage. I was 20 years old at the time and I was given an opportunity by a local bar owner in my hometown Klamath Falls to do a weekly hip hop set. I can still remember that first moment performing a song I had written in front of a crowd of people. It’s still one of the best feelings in the world to me. I knew in that moment that music is where I wanted to be. I remember all the nerves I felt and the first bit of stage fright but after that first song I just knew deep down that I was meant to do this. Before that first performance I think hip hop was more of a fantasy than anything. To see it come into reality that way was an amazing moment for me. Success to you is… There are many forms of success in the world. There’s financial success, social success, as well as personal success. To me it’s all about finding a good balance of all three. I’ve always had a bit of a distaste of the idea of money driven society and think it takes away a lot of aspects of humanity that shouldn’t be overlooked. People put money before their families and friends as well as relationships and I try my best to make those things a priority first. I know that has left me playing a lot of catch up in the money game we’re all a part of, but to me success is about being able to look back one day and say to myself, “ Wow, I never let the illusion of fame or wealth seduce me into being someone I’m not.” If I’m never rich or famous and I know that I’ve lived my life to help others through my music and tried to spread positivity; that’s success. Success in music to me would be making a living traveling and spreading my influence through my artistic ability without the burden of being tied down by a 9-5pm job.
