The Princess has hidden away her orphaned niece, who shamed the family when she bore a child out of wedlock, in a convent. Accused by Angelica of being pitiless, the Princess sings of how the spirit of Angelica's dead mother still weeps for the shame Angelica brought upon the family and continues to demand atonement.
