“Es gibt ein Reich” from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS by Seattle Opera

In her magnificent dramatic monologue “Es gibt ein Reich,” the death-obsessed Ariadne, abandoned on a desert island by a faithless lover, awaits the arrival of the messenger of death with music of erotic intensity: “Thou shalt set me free. This burden of living, thou takest it from me, thou takest it from me. I will be lost in thee; Ariadne will be with thee.” Jane Eaglen sang Ariadne at Seattle Opera in 2004. Gerard Schwarz conducted the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
