Viking Food by A Scottish History Podcast published on 2017-11-04T20:24:32Z Hi all, Sara here. Welcome to my first episode for the Scottish History Podcast! I’m really excited to be a part of this project and I thought I’d start things off by talking about a few of my passions — Vikings, archaeoloy, and FOOD! So today’s episode will be about connecting to the Vikings in northern Scotland by looking at the archaeology of what they ate and their agricultural economy. It’s a major topic to try and cover in 30 minutes, but I hope my overview will bring you a little closer to the farmers of Viking Age Scotland and give you a sense of what their lives would have been like. I’ll talk about rearing livestock for meat and dairy, fishing, hunting, growing grains, and even a bit about some structural elements of farmsteads in this period. Using both historical and archaeological evidence I will hopefully show the complex sense of culture and identity attached to the Vikings and what they were serving up for dinner! Enjoy.
