Picking up where the original low-budget 1984 science fiction classic left off, James Cameron’s big-budget sequel finds Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and her adolescent son John (Edward Furlong) now befriended by a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) reprogrammed to protect them from a newer, more lethal T-1000 model (Robert Patrick) that will stop at nothing to kill them. A prolific television composer largely unknown in the film world when he scored the original “The Terminator,” Brad Fiedel bolsters the sequel’s augmented scale with a supercharged musical accompaniment widely considered the first serious electronic action score for a major studio production. Industrial, percussive and relentlessly militaristic, Fiedel’s moody, pulsating score strikes a note of post-modern tribalism to evoke the film’s ominously apocalyptic storyline. Whether scoring one of the film’s more subdued, introspective interludes (Desert Suite) or one of its many dynamic chase sequences (Tanker Chase), Fiedel’s soul-piercing cues are a triumph of contradictions: rousing yet ominously foreboding, futuristic yet primal.
