Tasked with providing Kerouac’s semi-autobiographical existential road trip an appropriate musical signature, Oscar-winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Babel”) opts for a freewheelingly eclectic, jazz-inspired score that emphasizes the free-spirited determination of the film’s characters as well as the oftentimes contradictory aimlessness of their journey. From the improvisational, percussive tenor of tracks like Roman Candles and The Open Road to the more traditional soft jazz quartet performance Lovin’ It to the fast jam of tracks like That’s It, Santaolalla paints a musical portrait that perfectly captures the exhilaration of the 1950s experimental jazz explosion and underlines its timelessness with a brilliantly contemporary brush.
