In the proud tradition of Shaun of the Dead, director Matthias Hoene’s 2012 comedy centers on a pair of bank robbing Cockney brothers who, with their gang in tow, set out to free their granddad from his retirement home before a growing zombie outbreak consumes all of London. Classic zombie and horror film motifs, funk, jazz, spaghetti western, classic orchestral and the familiar pulsating percussion of contemporary action films enjoy an enthusiastic and seamless mashup in this 21st century makeover courtesy of British composer Jody Jenkins. Goth guitar, medieval chant and unapologetic ‘60s era, low-grade, DIY Moog-style synth collide in “The Rescue Mission” while “Introducing the Gang,” “Zombies Take London,” “Heroes” and “Bank Heist” further blow the unpredictable musical potpourri wide open with an even zanier array of influences. Nowhere, however, does Jenkins appear to be having quite as much fun as when riffing on ‘50s and ‘60s era exploitation cinema – “Ahhh, A Baby Zombie” and “The Zombie Infestation” breathing new life into the memorably overwrought electronic scores of yesteryear.
