SCREAM (2020) by S m published on 2021-01-24T17:27:54Z SCREAM is an audio interruption created by a black experimental choir - a distant echo of Maria’s scream. Maria, a character in Sarah Maldoror’s film, Sambizanga (1972). Those who joined the choir responded to THE CALL circulated by the artist, ‘a choir for those black people who want to scream, not solely for themselves but for the pain they have experienced having witnessed the extraction and/or negligence of another’. THE SCREAM, that is simultaneously breath, song, sound and sharp deviation, is a process developed through a series of workshops devised by the artist. After the workshops we performed THE SCREAM for ourselves. A portion of the audio documentation of the performance remains for you to experience. Dedicated to my family (chosen and blood) and to those impacted by state violence and carceral systems worldwide. First shown at MAMA Rotterdam 2020 Thank you to Members of the choir: Rev Chunky, Banana, Malaika Ibreck and samra mayanja.
