2001 was a pivotal time in the dance music world. More and more bedroom DJs were popping up, and with the advancement of technology, anyone could create music. It was at this time that Sam Packer, along with two other music enthusiasts, created The Proton Project: an experiment with the purpose of exposing little or unknown talent to the masses. Their intent was to inform people that there was much more going on in the electronic music scene other than the big name DJs who were playing at the clubs every weekend. The success of this endeavor was immediately felt, and Sam felt the need to push this idea further.
In May of 2001, Sam founded Proton Radio. The internet radio revolution made it possible to bring the Proton Project ideas to a streaming format that made it easy for people to hear their favorite underground DJs online. Starting very small, Proton’s goal was to create a roster of weekly or monthly shows from bedroom DJs throughout North America to showcase their talent. This idea quickly caught on, and by 2005, Proton had a selection of shows spanning the entire globe, from Dubai to Tokyo, Los Angeles to Athens. Now in it’s 7th year, Proton Radio has become the most respected online radio station for up and coming talent as well as established artists and DJs. Recently, DJs such as John Digweed, Anthony Pappa and James Zabiela have joined Proton. Uniting the underground with the mainstream, Proton has truly evolved.
Sam has been instrumental in the creation of the Proton Music brand as well. This digital music label has some 50 releases on Beatport and iTunes, and includes artists such as Elite Force, Moonbeam, Opencloud, and 16 Bit Lolitas. Proton Music was created in 2003 and incorporated the Proton philosophy of promoting lesser known artists. It’s releases have led to the label being one of the highest selling digital brands on Beatport, the world’s most respected digital music retailer.
Fast forward to Winter Music Conference in Miami, 2006. By this time Proton had thrown successful parties in Miami for over 3 years, and had even been nominated multiple years in a row for an IDMA award for Best Radio Station. 2006 was a special year for Sam. After a phenomenal party at Pawn Shop on a Sunday morning, he decided that he needed to start DJing again. Since the summer of 2006, Sam has developed a party brand, Proton Sessions, which along with Proton Radio and Proton Music, strives to promote not only people on the Proton roster of show hosts, but also up and coming talent from around the globe at its events. Proton Sessions parties have been held around the world in many of the hottest clubbing spots. The most recent Proton events are being held in places such as Buenos Aires, Belgrade, Dallas, and Mexico. The Proton name has truly reached a global presence not only online, but in the clubs as well.
In 2007, Sam, along with Opencloud’s Corey Spengler, founded DARE Recordings and Proton Ltd. These two labels will allow for expanded creativity upon the Proton Music brand. Seeking to diversify and explore new sounds and artists, Corey and Sam are teaming up to create new ideas for the scene and expand the vision that Sam created with Proton.
