My piece Unity is about integration and inclusiveness. Those three concepts were the first impression I got from Saint Peter’s Church when I became the pianist of Iglesia Sion over two years ago. When I got the commission to compose a piece for the three musical branches of the church, I found myself with the challenge of integrating the three musical ensembles. The challenge of being inclusive with all the instruments was, (the baroque period instruments are tuned in 415 while the rest of the instruments are in 440), to come up with an overall “unity” for piece. When Pastor Jared R. Stahler suggested me to use the following biblical text from Ephesians “Be eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace," the concepts I had in mind got somehow enhanced by the beauty and deep meaning of those words. As a final note, I would like to add that during this past two months that I was writing this piece the planet earth has been facing unprecedented levels of aggressiveness and human-caused catastrophes. So in the middle of my creative process of writing the piece the final words of the text strongly resonated in me. Therefore, peace and paz are repeated many times throughout the whole piece. It seems to me the only way to get over this unprecedented moment in history of a disunited, disintegrated and exclusive planet is by finding the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. — Emilio Teubal
