Gealach Chríoch Lochlann by ryan molloy published on 2013/12/21 13:51:07 +0000 Commissioned by Moving On Music supported by the BBC Performing Arts Fund Music Fellowship, Gealach Chríoch Lochlann (2013) is dedicated to the Danish String Quartet who gave the first performance of this work in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh, on 27th November 2013. Programme note: I first met the Danish String Quartet, the dedicatees of this work, in Bantry in June 2010 at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and I was simply in awe of their abilities. Their comfort with the nuances of traditional Irish music as well as an astonishing command of contemporary classical repertoire was both refreshing and inspiring. Many tunes, (and a few pints!) were shared, all of which made a lasting impression on me as both a composer and performer. Not only did I get to know the sound of the Danish String Quartet but I got to know the musicians behind the instruments. This piece draws on many influences but at its core tries to express something that I can’t put into words. A kinship between traditions, even countries, maybe! At any rate, this is intended to be reflective music, with a dash of trad (on the rocks, please).
