Rubber Duc is an independent, fresh, four-piece band, made up of Nick Jordaan (Lead vocals, acoustic guitar, hi-hat), Brendan Campbell (Lead guitar, kick drum, backing vocals), Sheldon Sham (Saxophone, crash, tambourine, backing vocals) and Amiel Gopal (Bass, snare drum, backing vocals).
Their unique “folk-swing-hop” sound immediately gathered them a flock of followers and media attention – they’ve been called “Joburg’s hottest new band” and “the next big thing” – all of this in the first year of existence… Rubber Duc’s melodies are catchy and the lyrics are nostalgic, evocative and clever. Whether performing original material, “ducking up” covers, or poking fun at the world around us, their live performances guarantee a good time for all!
THE STORY SO FAR:
It all started in late 2013, Nick Jordaan and Brendan Campbell were asked to help out a friend and put together a quick acoustic set. At this virtually impromptu debut show, they were booked for their first “official” gig: The ON THE HILL – MOROCK 2013 Festival. Needing to spread the word, they quickly recorded a cover of The 1975’s “Chocolate”, shot a video, recruited Sheldon Sham on sax and Rubber Duc took flight!
Their first single was released in March of 2014. “Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That” is a satirical musical look at living in South Africa today. The song is inspired by the YouTube clip of Sweet Brown that went viral worldwide. In true Rubber Duc style, it is a humorous take on current issues... All the stuff we simply don’t have time for! It made the top 2 on the 5FM and East Coast Radio charts:
The follow up hit, “Stay with Me” charted on Algoa FM as well as many campus and community stations:
At the end of 2014, Rubber Duc released the feel-good anthem “It’s Alright”, which is getting airplay on a daily basis on both 94.7 Highveld, KFM, Algoa and ECR:
And 2015 has seen feathers fly!
When Rubber Duc stepped into Kyle White’s film studio in mid January, they had no idea what was about to happen... Kyle had painted the studio white (no pun intended) and challenged the Ducs to record a cover and film it in just 3 days – a “ducked-up” version of 5th Harmony’s “Sledgehammer” was the result:
What happened next, was ducking mind-blowing! Virtually overnight it went viral in South America, was featured on the X-Factor Brazil’s website and became “Web Celeb of the Week” on a radio station in New York! But that was just the beginning...
On the 18th of February Camila Cabello from Fifth Harmony took to Twitter to give a huge thumbs up to Rubber Duc's version, calling it “AMAZEBALLS” and “so creative” and the twitter-sphere went wild! @RubberDucMusic was trending at #2 in the United States according to Trendsmap USA.
X FACTOR BRAZIL:
SATURDAY NIGHT ONLINE – WEB CELEB OF THE WEEK:
In March, Rubber Duc released ZEBRA HORSE, which got its first spin on 94.7 and has since been played on 5FM, KFM, ECR and Jacaranda, as well as smaller regional and campus stations.

In April 2015, the Ducs welcomed a 4th member to the flock: Amiel Gopal not only plays bass, but joins the percussion line on the snare drum. Amiel’s talent adds another layer of spice to the unique Rubber Duc sound and brings even more energy to their infectious live performances!
To celebrate the addition of Amiel, Rubber Duc recorded another of their trademark covers with Taylor Swift’s “Style”. Who doesn’t love a spot of Tay Tay?
With the latest 3 singles on high rotation on radio stations across the country, Rubber Duc has just released their 4th single SCREW LOOSE! This feel-good summer theme song celebrates their mad love for Cape Town and highlights the culture, the irresistible urge to let loose, and the silly antics us tourists get up to when on holiday – trying to squeeze every last drop of fun out of every moment...

Rubber Duc’s most emotional cover yet was done to honour the worldwide phenomenon of Adele’s “Hello”...
